World Immunization Week is celebrated every last week of April aiming to remind the importance of vaccines and their regular use to protect people of all ages against disease. This great invention is still the best way to control any vaccine-preventable diseases and the most cost-effective intervention. An estimated 2 to 3 million deaths every year were averted thanks to vaccination but unfortunately, around 20 million children are still waiting for the vaccines they need. Established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to highlight the significance of inventions, patents, trademarks and copyrights and how they can influence the future of our planet. April 26 was selected because on this day of 1970, the convention signed in Sweden in 1967 establishing the WIPO entered into force.
